Civil commitment is when an individual is deemed to be a danger to self or others and is locked up for a potentially extended period of time because of this, and not through being found guilty of breaking criminal laws, but psychiatric laws. They are not charged with a crime. Adults should be allowed to be a danger to their own self, and if they commitment a crime, they should be dealt with in the criminal justice system in a humane and non cruel way, not diverted into the psychiatric system.
The justice system should be a humane form of punishment. Unjust laws should not exist. Peaceful adults who respect the rights of others should not be locked up.
